It is a common misconception that fire alarms and smoke detectors are the same thing. They actually function very differently and are therefore suited to different environments.
Smoke detectors alert you of a fire whenever it senses a certain number of smoke particles in the air. Acts as an early warning system so you, your co-workers or family can leave the building. Victims of fire-related deaths are often asleep when the fire starts and smoke inhalation is the leading cause of fatality. Smoke detectors are the most basic device available on the market and are cheap, especially considering they could save lives! They are best suited for homes, where people can exit the property quickly and easily.
As well as an alarm, fire alarms can also have additional devices fitted – ie flashing lights installed, door retainers, vibrating pillow devices for hard of hearing. They can be linked to a local fire station (via Monitoring station), minimising the amount of damage done to the building. They can be linked to a sprinkler system.
Various detection devices can be connected to the system. These include heat detectors, which are activated when the room temperature becomes too high, or smoke detectors, which are triggered when there are a certain number of smoke particles in the air.
Fire alarm systems generally have a ‘Break Glass’ box installed which allows people to trigger the system. Fire alarms are more complex systems than smoke detectors and, although they can be used in domestic premises, are perfect for shops, warehouses and businesses, especially if there is a large number of people working there.
The type of thing you will need to look for in a fire alarm system will depend on its purpose. Fire alarm systems for large companies, for example, will be a lot more complex and probably have more features than one for a home.
Firstly, you will have to decide how many units you need to cover your home or business. Businesses will need to have a risk assessment or site survey carried out to establish the type of alarm is required.
